LinkedIn Personal Branding Tips for Women

In the past few years, LinkedIn has changed dramatically from a “jobseeker” platform to a powerful professional network helping people build their online personal brand and grow their network so they can connect to their dream business opportunities.

Back in 2015, I was approached by a recruiter on LinkedIn for a job opportunity at one of the world’s largest tech companies. Since then, I have built a strong online personal brand on LinkedIn which has helped me to start and grow a successful online business by attracting high-ticket clients, PR opportunities, brand partnerships, and more.

Whether you’re a student, job seeker, (online) business owner, or professional, there are a lot of opportunities hidden in this wildly underestimated platform! But, with +690 million members worldwide, it might be difficult to stand out from the crowd.

In this blog post, I’m sharing my top three personal branding tips on LinkedIn for fellow ambitious women so you can get started building your authentic, online personal brand on the world’s largest professional network — no matter what industry you’re in.

1. Create a complete, well-optimized LinkedIn profile.

First, have a look at your personal LinkedIn profile. Did you know that complete profiles earn up to 21x more profile views, 36x more messages, and 9x more connection requests? These are all potential business opportunities!

Spend some time to create a complete profile with your target audience in mind. But, most importantly, think about topics that you want to be known for so you can optimize your profile to showcase your authentic personal brand. Add a catchy headline, write an engaging summary, and use relevant keywords to increase your chances of appearing in search results. You can download my free LinkedIn profile checklist here.

2. Grow your network with relevant people.

Remember, LinkedIn is a relationships-driven platform — invest in growing and nurturing your network with relevant people to start building relationships and already have a foot in the door when the right opportunities arise.

Connect with relevant people in your industry and invest 10 – 15 minutes every day to build your relationships by scrolling through your LinkedIn Newsfeed and engage with relevant content within your network. Tip: Always include a personalized note when sending a connection request. Think about insights such as a common group, mutual connection, or shared interest to increase your chances of growing your network.

3. Increase your visibility to get noticed.

Finally, to build your personal brand on LinkedIn you need to increase your visibility to get noticed. Share valuable, engaging content such as status updates and long-form articles including a photo, video, PDF file, or a link to a website or article to establish yourself as a thought leader in your industry or area of expertise.

Think of industry insights, career accomplishments, success stories, and any tips or advice you would like to share around topics related to your personal brand. Always keep in mind your target audience whenever publishing content on LinkedIn, but most of all — be authentic! Don’t be afraid to ask your network for their feedback or input around a specific topic, and share inspiring stories that add value to your network.
